Paul,
We will be building on to our land when we go back in three weeks.
We will work in the mission and then add soil to our land and make
raised beds, then put in fruit trees and finally a garden. We have been
given lots of seeds from folks on many lists.
We, two adults and a houseboy, [2 + 1 = 3], will budget about $1200
a month for basic expences and we have a car and furniture that is
paid for. We have a computer, appliances and entertainment that is
also paid for. We are always conservative when we stay in the islands,
but we plan to be very conservative this time in order to have money
for our construction projects.
The peso exchange is overing just about 40 to one. The cost of getting
things done inside the islands of paradise are also much higher. Gone,
long gone are our days of living on $675 a month. If you will remind me,
and you are interested, I can post my budget in a month or so, after I arrive
back on the island.
The best to you and yours....
JJ

As for retiring in Manila on P 27,000 a month ? Practrically impossible, especially since medicare in only valid inside the U.S. and it's terratories and your medical expenses would most likely be out of pocket. I have 2 brothers in law that live in manilla now. I'll tell you what his monthly expenses are on the cheaper one. It's a single one bedroom simple apartment aprox 25km's from downtown.
Rent P 10,000
Electricity P 3,500
City water P 600
Cooking gas P650.
Keep in mind too this place is unfurnished so you'll have furnature and appliances to buy among other things. His basic expenses not including food and transportation is already half your monthly income. You could probably get by outside the big cities of Manila or Cebu on your income if your frugal and out in the provence. But that would bring up another problem should you need medical care.
Provincial hospitals are usually understaffed, Ill equipped and not well stocked beyond the very basics. I would not recommend you move here.
