Dear friends and members,

Where are the story tellers? Story tellihg was when I lived in the
province, considered an art. People would come from far to hear a
good story told.

Did you know they have urban legends here top. Did you hear? The son
of the owner of one of the Gaiasno department stores is a snake! I
mean really a snake, not human, not a snake in the grass! (Ahas nang
damo!} My wife's father and many use snakes to heal. There are sprits
all over. My landladys helpers told mine today, they are looking for
a job. They are leaving because she has evil spirits in the house.
They worry about her and her husband but they must protect
themselves. Everyone seems to understand.

President Marcos and wife Imelda were guide by spritualist. Is you
G/F wife influence by a medium or spiritualist? Do you know what she
belives in here heart?

Let share about Jeeps and Quack doctors, things tha work. How much it
cost is on the website at http://www.livinginthephilippines.com

If you have nothing to post about ask a a stimulating on topic
question. Ask and you can learn, make your life richer through
understanding. And you can enjoy this rich culture and the colorful
people all around you. If not, might as well stay where you are.

Thank you for being here!

Very best always,
Don

[LinP3] More from Tom the 80yo who does the Chah Chah Chah! If he does come, I may be there to meet him, ask others to come too

Click to Join at
http://www.livinginthephilippines.com

Dear friend and members,

I did give you the subject of Tom's (not his real name) post to me: "Moving
to Manila."

He was not asking but telling. I get a lot of these. This guy is coming no
mater what. I told him I share this on topic post with a stranger with my
friends. There may be a couple here.

Tom write;

I am sorry I was not clear enough.

[look how cool Tom is. He did not say, "You don't understand!" He took the
blame. He will do fine I do believe.]

But I have had too many "pros" and not enough "cons," so I was glad to hear
yours. I neglected to tell you that I am 80 years young, not 80 years old.
In fact I am getting ready to go to the dance tonight. Wait till you see me
do a fast Cha Cha Cha. I may have a chance to teach dancing (for free of
course.) Anyway, I met a person from the Philippines and he told me he pays
his office help P12000 per month. And they may have dependents.

[this implies he has dependents or will be getting some. The plot thickens!"

My money is translated to P28000 per month.

[We tell him but he got it figured.

I should be able to exist on that, since my tastes are quite simple. and I
intend to look for a place in Pasay City, near the VA. Since I ride a bike
everywhere here, I intend to do the same over there. I don't need a car.
All indications are that I can get a Studio Apartment for less than P7000
per month. Class? of course not but good enough for me. I may not need to
save that much in money by doing my own cooking and I will eat out.

All indications are that I will not be eating steak and lobster. From there
I want to look up the Senior Centers and find out where all the dancing is.
Maybe teach dancing. I had an uncle and aunt who passed a couple years back
and both were ninety nine. I may have a few years left too.

So the only thing I am waiting for is the latest rulings on the VA. Just
sent them an e-mail. Anything other help will be appreciated. Thanks Tom

-------------------------------------
I will keep you advised. I am very serious, if he come I will be there to
greet him, maybe rip. I doubt if they will be lined up to rip him off. I bet
he bring a suitcase.

Again, I will send you comments. Remember everyone in the States is telling
him he is insane to come here at all, just like the did or do us.

Very best always,
Don

Re: [LinP3] I get severl of these evey day in my personal mail. What would you tell him.FW: Moving to Manila

Hi Thomas,
I know retired military here that recieved their meds through the VA in Manilla. Not sure how your situation would be with it being non service connected, but do have a point of contact for you.
Deparment of Veterans Affaris
1131 Roxas Boulevard
0930 Manila Philippines
Tele (632) 528-2500
Toll Free No: 1-800-1888-5252
Email: https://iris.va.gov

As for retiring in Manila on P 27,000 a month ? Practrically impossible, especially since medicare in only valid inside the U.S. and it's terratories and your medical expenses would most likely be out of pocket. I have 2 brothers in law that live in manilla now. I'll tell you what his monthly expenses are on the cheaper one. It's a single one bedroom simple apartment aprox 25km's from downtown.

Rent P 10,000
Electricity P 3,500
City water P 600
Cooking gas P650.

Keep in mind too this place is unfurnished so you'll have furnature and appliances to buy among other things. His basic expenses not including food and transportation is already half your monthly income. You could probably get by outside the big cities of Manila or Cebu on your income if your frugal and out in the provence. But that would bring up another problem should you need medical care.
Provincial hospitals are usually understaffed, Ill equipped and not well stocked beyond the very basics. I would not recommend you move here.

Paul in Iloilo

Dear friends, members,

I get and answer these, like the post below, every day, try to answer all.

One of several today I share with you.

I am 80 years old and want to retire in Manila. I receive medical aid from
the VA for my heart, (not service connected,) Atenolol and Warfarin and a
monthly check up for blood levels. I get Social Security of $669 per month
which I presume is adequate for where I plan to live. I know I get a tourist
visa when I enter the country with a round trip ticket, and have been told
of the extensions up to two years. By that time I should know if I want to
stay. The biggest problem of the moment is that I am still not sure I can
receive the same aid at the VA in Manila as I get here in Hawaii. Thanks for
any help you can give me.
Thomas

I know the obvious answer is, don't do it! Any believe he does not shorten
his life or feel at this stage it does not make much difference where you
are? If he is strong enough to get here, he may come anyway. He may be in
"lab," with a Filipina, a chat mate. I have seen some strange things and
interesting people here, doing things hard to believe.

Before I tell him, better stay home, I will get your comments.

Not much going on today. If it stays so quiet I may share more but not the
name and address. I know you understand why. I will send your comments to
him. If you have comments answer as though you were talking to him.

Don,

I agree with you about this one. If he were to be practical and do what's
the best for him, he'd definitely stay home!

On the other hand; he's 80 already. He must have enough to get here and
find a place to stay...maybe with one of his chat-mates. Who knows how much
time he has left in this life whether he comes here or stays home? He may
just find happiness here for a little while and who would deny that of him?

Reminds me of a Filipino friend I knew in Cebu City a few years ago. He and
his wife returned to their home after having lived a long and productive
life in California. He had retired and was nearly 90 when we used to have
chats in the shade every afternoon. He once said, "I came home to die, but
for the life of me I don't know why anyone else would want to live here!"
Perhaps your poster is also looking for a place to rest before moving on...

Ron

[LinP3] Re: Learning Tagalog

I think the best way to learn tagalog, if you are really
serious is to study it like the school children.

Like in America, American have subject from grade one
to high school about English and grammar.

In the Philippines, they have subject on Pilipino or tagalog
from grade one to high school.

Not disrespecting the intellect of anyone, learn it from
grade one and to high school with the help or your wife.

Lesson from grade schooler are easy and you could progress
faster until reach high school.

What you need is a connection to a good school, so you could
buy the books that they used in Pilipino or tagalog.

This kind of learning will make you master, the language in
no time.
