[LinP3] Re: Widower Moving to Phils from USA with 2 TEENAGE DAUGHTERS...good idea or no?

Ron makes some good points Steve.

The thing is that most moves are real hard for just about any
teenager. I live in the Philippines now and had teenage daughters in
the past. I don't think I could have handled moving them to the
Philippines.

It is of course your decision but I think it is pretty clear that a
extended visit is required before a permanent move is made.

[LinP3] Re: Keeping your driver's license

Both work, Paul but sometimes two ID's are needed. The advantage of
using the Philippine Drivers License is that you might be considered
to be trying to adapt a little to the Philippines.

Like you said it is not necessary but it is sometimes an advantage
to have.

What I do if they want one ID I use just the Filipino license and if
they want two I use my Filipino license and my passport.

[LinP3] Re: Keeping your driver's license

I've driven in -
Belgium, no drivers licence before 1955, drive like driving a tractor
ie straight down the middle of the road, wrong way round
roundabouts...
Iran...
NYC...
NJ Turnpike...
St Vincent...
Libya...
Sea wall at Galveston...
Dover DE speedway...
Stock car driver...

Just a different way of ignoring common road sense in Philippines

Didn't feel particularly safe in the multicab, poor brakes, poor
performance, poor handling...no help in getting out of trouble caused
by others....

Doubt I'll drive in less than perfect weather tho'

[LinP3] Re: Going thru customs

A converter big enough to run a microwave is going to set you back a
minimum of P1000, closer to P3000+ for a good one that is less
likely to start a fire. P5000 will get you a good one that will run
most appliances,... ONE at a time if they are big electricity users.

Re: [LinP3] Re: Keeping your driver's license

P7,000??? I think I paid less than P1,000 total for everything, and that was with a couple hundred extra to expedite getting my picture taken to get my license the same day. I also got my wife one at the same time for about double the cost of mine (she doesn't drive).

From: John
Sent: Monday, January 07, 2008 11:20 AM
To: LivingInThePhilippines3@yahoogroups.com
Subject: [LinP3] Re: Keeping your driver's license

Ahah!!! The truth has been spoken, the rules are: There are NO
RULES!! After inquiring about getting a license, I was told by a
clerk in the city hall,(a friend of my wife) "If you have the Pesos
to pay, you can get a license." So, off I went to the LTO, and
without any other requests, I paid a clerk 7,000 Pesos, and got a
temp license, with the regular one due as quickly as I get a
B'rngy "clearance," drug test, and police report, to the tune of 500
Pesos each.
My primary reason for doing this was mentioned in a couple of
earlier posts here; the safety of NOT having to produce my passport
when asked for ID, and no more worry about having to replace it if
lost or stolen. You know the "LOOK" when you produce it for ID.
But
on another note, it gives them a sense of one desiring to be a part
of the country,(you'd be surprised at the level of acceptance
afterwards, I no longer need my wife to "bargain" for me when making
certain purchases, and all of you know what I mean by that phrase.

The most important FUN REASON of all is; when I feel like a good game
of "Chicken,Dodge-Ball, and Bumper Cars, rolled into a Demolition
Derby atmosphere," I just roll out the "tank," and let it rip!!
For a guy that learned how to drive in the mountains of the
Carolinas, back before the movie "Thunder Road" was made, and ripping
and running from the cops by racing to the state borders, etc, driving
here is like a throwback to my teen-age days, and the locals have
MUCH RESPECT, when they see this "Crazy Kano" roll out on the roads
here. Not that I'm advising this as a means of "Family
Entertainment." tho, just expressing my means of getting along,
especially when the local police keep asking me for tips on driving
and handling my vehicle. Can't tell them everything tho, they just
might try to use them on me, Ha Ha.
In all honesty, it DOES take a LOT of nerve to get out and drive
among the locals, most don't know ANY of the proper rules of the
road, so one must drive with their "head on a swivel" and be alert
for ANYTHING,and I DO MEAN ANYTHING!! I've seen some amazing messes
made with these little motorbikes, cars, trucks, and SUVs!! Thank God
they don't have the big bikes I'm used to seeing in the States, nor
the cars!! Now THAT'S when I'll be sitting on the sidelines
watching!! That's a scary thought to even have, guess I better go and
relax my imagination with a calming libation.

Happy Trails!! Ha Ha

Re: [LinP3] Re: Keeping your driver's license

I've been driving for about 3 months now (Cebu City and surrounding area) and have had no problems. It was a little scary at first, but once accustomed to the unwritten rules, I didn't find it difficult at all. The one major rule is, if it's bigger than you it has the right of way. I never make eye contact with another driver, but I constantly stay aware with peripheral vision. When I first started driving I was ran out of my lane by a taxi and swore that would never happen again. They still try, but once they see I'm not going to budge, they back off. I've driven all over the world and I find the style of driving here very effective (for here), although slow, unless you throw in a Traffic Enforcer, then it's less than slow.

Though it all looks different now, I know it's still the same...

that I was way over my head. They have a different set of rules

[LinP3] Visiting Palawan

My friends and I are considering a trip down to the island of Palawan,
more specifically, the El Nido area...flying into Puerto Princesa. It
looks beautiful, but then again most promotional photos do :)
Looks like we can get a pretty good deal.

Does anyone have experience, advice, information about the region,
vacationing and/or living there, etc.?

Salamat! -Matthew
