Hello,

Does anyone know of a dentist in Cebu in which I could get a root canal. One person advised my against getting this done over here and want until I get back to the States.

There is no pain, so my reason to have it done here was solely because to the cost.

Thanks in advance for any responses...

You had me confused a while. I'm in Valencia, 22 clicks west of DGTE
and Amlan's a far piece. We always think of that as north but that's
probably because of the "North Road".

There's a welding shop about 100 m from me selling 3" x 3" concrete
posts about 1.5 m long. If you're interested I'll ask the price.

Any handyman can make them for you. I had two of my guys make about
150 for me. They just get some coco lumber from any coco mill,
they're everywhere, and make enough forms for an even number of sacks
of cement. Put a piece of rebar down the middle, mix the concrete
anywhere using only a shovel, move it using a bucket. Then you wait
one day, remove the forms and do it again. In my case they made about
15 forms and it took two guys about two hours a day for 10 days. I'm
building three buildings so I can keep them busy with other things in
the mean time but if you can't or don't want to you can negotiate a
"per piece" price rather than a day rate. I pay Php150 per day for
that kind of work but that's for a long term employee. For short term
you might have to go up to 200 but if they ask for more than that keep
looking. It's amazing how much prices come down when word gets around
that "the kano knows how to say 'No!'"

For 4" by 4" by 2 m posts I used 10mm rebar. The locals usually use
smaller.

If you want them really pretty, they drape the mold with a few layers
of old newspaper which makes the surface smooth and rounds the corners
just a bit and makes it easier to get them out of the mold. Of course
they think you're crazy to want to spend extra time an money to make
fence posts "pretty".

Hope this helps.

Re:Math lesson and RE: [LinP3] Re: Handling the falling dollar.

Since last July, just before the Presidents state of the country speech the stock market is down 7%
while the peso is up 11%. They have cut the interest rates a number of time even with inflation above the upper bands, 3.2% and 3.9% in November and December. They are forecasting two more rate cuts to try to spur the stock market. I think the peso will continue to raise at a rate faster than its neighbors because of so many people becoming OFW's. This of course will be at the expense of its exporters and domestic manufacturing. China gets its foreign reserves from exporting products. The Phillipines get most of its foreign reserves from exporting its people who then send remittances back to feed their families. This will only get worst and the government has no control because their are so many better opportunities outside of the Philippines. Many of the smartest Filipinos will leave permanently and petition for their families. Anybody coming here should factor in a much a higher peso and alot higher inflation. With so many OFW's their is also
a large tax leakage which is why you have a 12% vat tax. In the end things will blow up like the Mexico
currency crisis which is already starting to show with currency fixing for some sectors.

[LinP3] Philhealth - Premium Upgrade

List Guide note: Somone wrote some where else. . ..

I am running myself ragged. My GF's mom (74 yrs old) is constanly in
need of medical care. We send $100 a month for her meds. I recently
found out that her Philhealth plan only pays 20% of her costs. Every
so often another "emergency" rears it's ugly head and we get a call
for more money. I'm wondering if we can pay for the best "Philhealth"
plan available and thereby cut the out of pocket expenses.
Currently the cheapest plan is 100 pesos a month. IF possible, I'd
rather pay 500 pesos a month and have her *co-pay* go from 80% to 20%.
Sure makes sense to pay 500 pesos on a premium and send her 4500
pesos for the meds and other out of pocket expenses.

I've gone to the Philhealth website and looked at the various plans
that are offered. I found a good plan but I can't find a premium cost
associated with the plan. I have been on the phone for the last 7
hours (8 am to 3 pm PI time & calling from Hawaii) trying to contact
someone there. That's where the fustration sets in. The lines are
almost always busy. On the three times I got through I received a
recorded message. On two occasions I pressed two for enrollment and
once I hit zero for the operator. The extension rings, no one picks
up and it disconnects. (How do the locals deal with this?Huh)

So here's is my query for the enlighten ones: Can I buy and
"upgraded" *Philhealth* plan for mama and how much? Also, does
anyone know a "magic" number (I'm calling 673-9999 & 673-3754)that I
can call to get to a real live person at Philhealth to answer my
question?

Dear Jt,

You point is well take. Pray tell, if the sky does fall, were do we
run? No where like here, and English speaking country were folks take
care of each other. And you don't freeze in the winter time, warm
climate warm people the best place in the world to live like a pauper
pauper if you post is corret.

Personal I feel this is panic setting in, expect to see a lot of "sky
is falling," or already fell posts. I still pay my $380 rent on my
six bedroom house and eat pretty good, will find a way to do that if
it goes to P20 to one. At P1 to P1 I will still have warmth and
enough to buy a bottle of rhum. :)

For those who don't remember the P56 to 1 was a relatively quick
bump, even P57. A lot more are staying and enjoying life here tbat
going back to their countries, especially the US where people are
cold and always have been.

Re: [LinP3] Re: Help With Filipino Birth Certificate.

That will works if your birth certificate is not recorded at the NSO. If it
does when you ask copy of your birth certificate from NSO you'll get the
same problem with your BC. Before doing the late registration make sure that
your birth certificate is not recorded at the NSO otherwise you'll doubling
your trouble.

Mine is really complicated. I have issued passport in the past with wrong
birth of place and wrong birth date I renewed that twice with no problem.
But when I want to correct the discrepancy in my passport that I start from
square one. First I check the NSO for the copy of my BC they don't have any
record. Then I get a certificate of no record in Manila which is stated in
my passport which is actually I was born in Quezon province. Then I get the
copy of my birth certificate from the local registrar where I was born
including baptismal certificate with the correct birth date on it. Then I
bring the correct BC at the NSO to have it authenticated on security paper.
Now I can obtain copies of my BC from NSO through mail with no problem.

Before getting a late registration for live birth a person concern should go
check to the NSO if she / he has record there if not then it's fine to
have acquire BC as a late registration. It is also worth it to consult
lawyer if it's really complicated I did that before correcting the
discrepancies with my documents I only paid the lawyer P400.00.

[LinP3] Re: Handling the falling dollar.

Bud. We came over almost 3 years ago when the peso was at 56. At
that time, I expected the dollar to weaken and put everything I had
into pesos. I am continuing to do so since I expect the dollar to
fall further as time goes on. When it hits 30 in a year or two (my
prediction) today's exchange rate of 40 will look pretty good. My
kids have social security accounts and I am dividing their funds with
half to pesos and half remaining in dollars (may increase it to
75:25). I think we are seeing a shift in economic power from the west
to the east and doubt if we will see a reversal. The US has made too
many mistakes and my guess is that the US economy is headed on a one-
way slide down hill. Most US consumer goods are now imported from
overseas and US productivity seems to be losing ground every day.
Things could still change for the better but I doubt if anyone in
power has the will to do what needs to be done. The US policy is to
spend, spend, spend and let our grandchildren worry about it. Problem
is, there won't be much left to worry about by that time. On the
other hand, Asia is just the opposite and is entering a golden era.
That's my novice view of things anyway, for what it's worth--one of
the main reasons we decided to move to the Philippines. Another is
that Filipinos are used to having to struggle and I think they will be
more able to weather the upcoming storm than Americans who will
probably panic once they realize what is happening. I feel safer
here. John. San Carlos City, Pangasinan.
