Updates in Your Groups, May 5, 2010
I've been getting these unsolicited and unwanted e-mails for a week or more. Is anyone else?
Living in the Philippines foreigners, expats, Filipina/ os others many living in Cebu, living in Manila, and all over discuss Philippine retirement, travel, relationships, jobs, travel, retire, live or do business. Information on the culture, customs, cheap quality education, houses and apartments, pension houses , hotels, places to travel in and around the Philippines, cost tourist and permanent resident visas, doing business, Manila, living in Davao, living in Angeles City, Baguio
Many new members get frustrated because there is much discussion on this Group about things other than the Philippines. People who have recently moved to the Philippines or are visiting are primarily interested in learning and gathering information about the RP. We are happy to help you and provide you that information.
Another core group of constituents are foreigners and filipinos who live in the Philippines or frequently visit the Philippines and do not need that kind of assistance. These members frequently get into discussions on matters such as local and foreign politics, life styles, world events, etc. For the new members who are not interested in that type of discussion or information please just skip those posts / threads and read about the things your are interested in.
The Group Rules are listed under this URL: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/cebucitytoday/files/Group%20Rules%20%26%20Notes/
Again, welcome to the Group and I hope you will share with us and we will try our best to assist you.

Scot,
You are correct! It is VERY dangerous here as two weeks ago a man was killed 50 meters from my rented home. I did not realize at the time but Mambaling is on the southern edge of Cebu city and MANY squatters here and also shabu addicts. Government housing is also here.Addicts run out of drugs early morning and that is when they do most of the stealing. I live in a compound with three other houses and someone jumped the fence last week in early morning. No harm was done but I went directly to Danao and purchased a .38 for future reference.
I have lived here 5 months and have known of 4 different robberies and also the aforementioned killing of sari-sari store owner. I live 100 meters from the McDonalds you mentioned!
For you newbies who are seeking a place in Cebu City I recommend safer barangay like these. Lahug, Guadalupe,Banawa.
Coach
I am now coaching in Talamban so I seek a rental home there.

Purpose of a notary?
It seems here in The Philippines that notaries have no idea of their actual purpose and the laws they are to follow.
Every time I write some simple document that needs the signature notarized the notaries rewrite the entire document and add a lot of unnecessary or simply incorrect information. The job of a notary is simply to verify the identity of the person who is signing the document in the presence of the notary.
Why can't they just do that and leave the document writing to whoever needs the document? If I want to make a document selling you the
I needed a simple General Power of Attorney for my sister in
That exact document was what I gave to my mother when she was still alive and it served the need but when I needed a new one in my sisters name the notary here decided he needed to justify his fee and retyped the whole thing adding a lot of stuff I neither needed or wanted. A notary in the USA has a stamp with all his or her notarial license information on it and when the person signing has properly identified themselves they put the notarial seal on it, sign the stamp and record the transaction in the legal register,.
Here I once tried to get my wife's signature notarized on divorce papers and the notary said, "We don't have divorce in The Philippines so we don't notarize divorces." She did not even know that a foreigner can obtain a divorce abroad that is legal in The Philippines and that she was not notarizing a divorce, but only the signature. All notaries in The Philippines are lawyers (with the exception of members of Congress and certain other officials) and that is why the lack of legal knowledge is so appalling
I have posed that question in Yahoo Answers and it will be interesting to see what, if any replies I get. I welcome comments and or answers here.

I would feel more comfortable in replying if I knew your first name but here is my two cents on the insurance issue.
If God forbid your wife is in an auto accident AND you aren't in the car AND your name isn't anywhere on the paperwork, the minimum might be sufficient. But don't expect a fast payout and if anyone is injured, don't expect to get your car back until some settlement/medical expenses are paid to the other party.
Now if YOU are in an accident of significance or to a lesser extent if your name is on the paperwork, be thankful you were smart enough to be carrying at least P-1,000,000 in liability coverage. Even with the higher coverage, don't expect a fast payout and if anyone is injured, don't expect to get your car back until some settlement/medical expenses are paid to the other party.
As for buying anything (new or used) in the Philippines the words "buyer beware" come to mind. When buying used don't expect too much and you won't be TOO disappointed.
Others here have much more more experience than I.

Sorry Kenn it's been proven through DNA testing that dogs were bred from wolves. The domestic canine has a round eye and the wolf's is oval shaped for better night vision. I used to think it was not possible for dogs to have evolved from wolves because of the eye shape
Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile
Actually the there are many recognized animal behaviorists that also agree with the unlikeliness of Canis d. evolving from wolves. After working with thousands of dogs, myself, and after having studied wolves and coyotes for over 5 years, consulting with veterinarians and shelters on behavior modifications, and authoring a book on working with the behaviors of dogs I'd imagine that my knowledge of predators in general allows me my conclusions.

> "Wolf/dog family"? Why not say the horse/dog family or the rat/wolf family? If you consider the charactistics of dogs and wolves you might reconsider your statement. For the most part when domestic dogs are bred to wolves the offspring is so aggressive they often kill one another. There are to many differences between dogs and wolves to belive that one evolved from the other. It's a convenient rumor for wanttabe trainers and amateur "behaviorists"

With the discovery of glitches in 76,000 compact flash (CF) cards in the Precinct Count Optical Scanner (PCOS) machines just five days prior to Election Day, the probability of a "NO-EL" (no election) scenario is almost a certainty. There is just no way that Smartmatic-TIM — the contractor responsible for the operation of the new Automated Election System (AES) — could fix the "source code" glitches, lab-test the corrected "source code," create 76,000 new CF cards, and thoroughly field-test the PCOS machines throughout the country. Not in five days. Not in 30 days. They'd be lucky if they can generate a glitch-free "source code" in 60 days. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is left with no other option but to postpone the May 10 elections. To proceed would only lead to chaos and total breakdown of the electoral process...
