[LinP3] Re: Re: Jury Duty in the States

If you are called for jury duty while in the islands, and I have been, you can
call the clerk of the court. Just explain that you are not living there in that
town, but you are merely voting there, [or what ever is the case]. I live in
Houston, but in Fort Bend County, and in unincorporated Houston. I often
get jury notices for Harris County. When I do I merely call the clerk of the
court and explain. So far, so good. The one time I actually did go in, [to Fort
Bend County], I was not needed.
My father-in-law was nearly 88 when he got his US citizenship. He registered to vote
the same day, a service of the folks at the ceremony. He got a jury notice
about 6 months later. I spoke to Papang and explained that he could say
he was too old. He could also say he did not hear well or see well, [all three
were true of course, but the old man would not admit any of the three]. He
finally did speak to the clerk of the court and say to her ''me no speak too much
English''. The clerk removed him from the rolls.
As a side note, he voted the first year he could. I never saw a man so proud.
He walked in, and was standing there with his naturalization papers. The folks
at the voting center told Papang they were glad to see him. They also had him sign
his name and I assisted him to a booth. He asked me who to vote for.... that one I
had trouble with..... and I told him to vote for the best man, [all but one, a lady judge,
whom I did vote for, were MALE], and Papang laughed. On the way home he
spoke of his pride in being able to vote. One by one, my brothers and sisters in-
law gained American citizenship and also voted. I am quite vocal that you can not bitch about the way things are if you do not vote.
As a last note, I have only missed voting one time while I was in the Islands of Paradise.
During that time, there were no candidates, just props and amendments, but I still
was upset that my ballet did not arrive in time for me to vote. I did get a letter from the
election folks and I believe it was an oversite on their part and I also believe it is and
oversite that will not be repeated. Mama has also been to the polls each time. She has
been on jury duty and has also gone but not sat a time or two. If jusy duty is a part of
being a citizen, then we need to honor that responsibilty. I am not sure I want to go in and
spend more for parking than I get for setting, but that is the way things are. Mama has
never been asked to set for a jury in the islands. She has not voted there either. We are
thinking of having her do so, but so far she is more stubborn than I am regarding her citizenship in the Philippine Islands.
