[LinP3] Quack Doctors in the Philippines

Dear friends,

Some of us from the West laugh at "quack," doctors here. I know I have and
still do sometimes. But we will also agree the body has tremendous powers of
self healing, with faith in something. Maybe anything you truly believe will
help you get your immune response in gear. Or at least, belief can bring
things into play you need for healing or recovery.

I was a biofeedback practitioner at one time, using electromyography (EMG)
here with stroke victims. As most of you know, it is a way of training new
muscles to take the place of those lost in a stroke, said to speed natural
healing by medical authorities, covered by many insurance plans, for that
and other purposes.

I once had a Filipino friend who lived with his father in a squatter area.
The father had a stroke and was partially disable from it. He could not
raise his right had up to his belt. And he had a limp, right leg. But could
walk though not very good. There were no problems with the facial muscles
though. He was told to exercise, the best therapy. That was good advice
from an M.D. He was also on blood pressure medicine, diet, etc.

I visited him to try biofeedback, see if I could help him along. His
children begged me to go to him. His house was in what a lot of people here
consider a dangerous area of Lebangon, Cebu, now more populated I think and
safer. But I felt very safe there, had an entourage of escorts with me. I am
not sure where they came from. I was like the wilderness at that time, a
jungle, but in Cebu City only a few miles from the midtown.

I started "treatment," in his one room cardboard and nipa house with his
family and him. I was shocked to find my biofeedback machine has one set of
batteries dead. And they were the ones for the EMG respone meter! The only
batteries left were smaller AA batteries for the temperature sensor I used
for relaxation training. The galvanic response (GSR) batteries were out too.
The batteries for the digital temperature I had were enough to light up the
machine and make it look like it was working to the untrained. But for EMG
for stroke, the remaining sensors, were worthless without their batteries
working. And we were far from batteries.

So like a "quack," doctor I continued with my treatment placing the sensors
on him as if I could read the correct of the LED read outs. I could not, of
course. But he did not know it. In fact later he told me, "I could feel the
power going into my body when the wires were connected healing me!" No power
ever goes in. Only the output from the body is read. I did not correct him.

After only about 15 minutes, I was bored. I knew nothing was going to
happen, ever without feedback. So I told him, "That is all for now. I will
see you next time." He was so thankful. He immediately raised his right
hand to the top of his head! "Now I can comb my hair," he said. And he
could! And further, he walked without a limp!

The power of the mind and faith is unbelievable. I expected "healing," not
to last, for him to relapse on a few hours, maybe a day or at most a week.
But he did exercise as the MD and I told him. And year later sill kept his
almost totally regained motor skills.

Let's not be too quick to sell the "quack dok's," short. Most don't charge
and only treat people who can't afford other treatment anyway, have patients
who cannot pay. I didn't even get an offer of an egg or a cracker. But that
only because he did not have any. But he had the power of his mind to heal
himself. We all do. But sometimes need a guide or "higher authority." to
help us do it. Here in the Philippines, the quack doctor does a pretty good
job from what I have seen.

I would love to hear some successful "Quack" doctor stories if we don't get
a violent reaction from the "empirical," among us. Maybe next time I will
tell you about Sister Helen in Leyte and her "secret medicine," P500 a pop.
I don't recommend it, though the folks in Leyte say, "powerful medicine."

But that will be on the Forum at the Living in the Philippines Community,

Sister Helen. . . Feel the power: to be added.

Very best always,
Don
