legroom back and front.

[LinP3] New Years - Manila Style

Wow! Once again!

Those that have never experienced News Years here in Manila (or the whole festive holiday
season for that matter) ... are missing out! What a treat! This city virtually "EXPLODES". The
noise alone is deafening. There I was standing on the helipad of my condo tower (Ermita)
with a 360 degree view of all Metro Manila, just absolutely stunned, words cannot describe
(nor the video) the Filipino passion for celebration! A third world country? I think not! Haha!
The Philippines btw has been the host to two World Pyro Olympics! Both held at the
Esplanade here in the Mall of Asia! I have yet to experience New Years in the provinces, kinda
wonder?

[LinP3] Notice: Our New Forum and Happy New Year From the List Guides, Forum Guides

Dear friends, members and guests,

We put this Yahoo List and website, http://www.livinginthephilippines.com
up eight years ago. I have been around most of that time here in Cebu after
moving down from Luzon. Sixty thousand plus members have been served.

But I have been out for a while because of health problems. Reports of my
death only slightly exaggerated. But I am happy to say I am back with the
List Guides. It is they who have continued to serve you in my absence. They
are why this resource is here for you today. Without them there would be no
List here. Without your contributions, there would be no List either. As I
just proved by my absence, it works without me. It is you and the Guides who
make it all a success.

We have a new Forum for you, The Living in the Philippines Community, soon
to have its formal grand opening but up for you to visit now. We will be
closing this List for posting soon. And all posting will be there. But keep
it and your memberships here for reading the archives. We feel The Living in
the Philippines Community at http://www.livinginthephilippines.com/forum
will allow us to serve you better. Some of you found out about it and are
there now. The rest of you are invited too, of course.

There is not much posting there yet, but will be soon. We will eventually
stop all posting here, ask you post there, instead. Archives will build fast
as they did here. But [there these will] remain available for you. And the
new ones will be easier to search. So there is no reason to resign from
here. You will still receive Special Notices from here regarding features
there and here.

If you have posts here, your favorite posts, and you would like to move them
to the Living in the Philippines Community Forum, please feel free to do so.

Most foreigners are here will agree with Alex, because it is too hard to
understand and accept. Of course they don't have to. No one holds a gun to
your head here making you pay. It is the system. You can participate or not.
Filipinos do participate. You as a foreigner can keep your ways, keep your
culture, watch Western TV and enjoy your usual life, never make a change it
that it what you want and most do. Maybe Alex, you just stop paying. Most
never start.

I paid taxes on the money I earnt to educate their 3 sons.
I paid taxes on the money I earnt to bury Lolo.
I paid taxes on the money I sent last week to pay off the 5/6.
I could go on, but I imagine you see my point.

I will help those in need, I will not help those whom I cannot see trying to
help themselves.

This is an internet forum and I proffer my opinion. Do with my opinion as
you wish, but I guarantee a majority of members concur with my sentiments.

[LinP3] Blue Cross Blue Shield

Does anyone know if there are any hospitals in the Philippines that accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield as full payment. I believe a member mentioned a hospital in Manila but I am not sure.

It depends on where you are travelling and how much time you have available. In some cases, the fastest way to travel is by fast ferry such as the many routes that connect the various islands in the Visayas. But, given the price you quoted, it is likely that your son is referring to larger ferrys such as the Superferry that travel from Manila to various places in the Visayas and Mindanao. If you can shop ahead of time, you can usually get fares on Cebu-Pacific that are close to the price of a private cabin on the Superferry -- remember that Superferry private cabins are sold by the room and are the same price whether one or two people use the cabin. The cabins also come with three meals (set menu) a day. Transit time can take 1-2 days depending on where you are going as compared to a short flight. We find the ferry a very relaxing way to travel.

I thought Andre's statement "The idea behind giving people welfare

unemployment and depression?" defined the complex nature of the
problem.

Realistically there are always going to be people who need help due
to sickness, bad luck, bad judgment, or incompetence and those who
abuse the system.

The inherent problems of welfare are real but so is the need for
help. Welfare is not a black and white issue.

What is considered small talk questions and answers can vary a lot
from one culture to another.

For example in North America "How are you" is a greeting and one
usually doen't want details, here in the Philippines and in a lot of
Asia the question "Where are you going" is similiar. When I lived in
China it was concidered small talk to ask "How old are you" and "How
much money do you make".
