Re: [LinP3] Re: Girl problem - Is sending money always the right thing to do?

For many years, I sent $50 a month to mama's youngest brother. The money was
sent as a military allotment. Most of the DK's, the dispursing clerks at that time
were Filipinos. It took a while to get the computer to accept the address, but for
many years the youngest got the money. That $50 allowed the family to eat, go
to school and have things that their neighbors only dreamed of. My father-in-law
got a small VA pension and that rounded out the families funds. The SIL worked and
my BIL found the best jobs he could at the time. The family also saved and worked
hard, going to good schools. Now, many years later, the family, all six kids and the
two parents, all live in NYC. A bit of help goes a long way. I am not saying to send
all they need and destroy the need to work, but to send some small conforts each
month, or on an irregular basis would not be all that unreasonable. After I retired,
and after the family moved to the USA the allotment was stopped. Not long ago,
they loaned me a few bucks for a pinch I was in... so ....!!
Happy Holidays...

but thought, what to heck. I knew her family was poor and that without
help this kid would not likely get much of a birthday. That was the
best money I ever spent. My wife sent me photos of the feast and cake
(with my name on it) as well as photos of her smiling 3yo daughter
opening presents. We have been married 7 years now and the little
girl is not so little any more. She just turned 10 and is as close to
me as any blood daughter.
I would not send a lot of money but a little help goes a long way
in the PI.Point is generalizing is always a mistake and taking a
chance sometimes pays off not to mention being a cheapskate is not an
endearing quality in any relationship.Yeah, you might get used. Is
being of use so bad?
