Dear friends,
How do we cope with this? Is it a big problem? Some will go back to the
States in panic, thinking the worse for the US dollar. Some will move from
the cites to the province, some will adjust their budgets, tighten there
belts I guess, live like a prince rather than a king. I fall in that group.
I am no math whiz, don't do fractions and not still not hip even adding
fast. I talked to a US CPA yesterday who was visiting a good friend. I said
something to effect that if you wanted to get back to where you were after
the 20 percent drop, you had to earn 20 percent more, not considering
inflation. He said correctly that you have to make 25 percent more to get
back to where you were after a 20 percent drop because the dollar is not as
much. I knew he was right. But sometimes I am glad I don't do math, not good
new.
I hope we get a "Cheap Charlie," discussion going. We will have such a
section on the Forum. A discussion about how to save money in the
Philippines, is important to most.

Very best always,

I'd also be interested in the point of view of anyone who's been in country
longer...early 90s when the $:Php ratio was 1:25 before jumping upto 1:40
around '95/96
Unfortunately for those coming when 1:50+ you arrived at the best possible
time in what is always a cyclic wave
SOMETHING TO THINK ON - 1962.....$1.

because of the falling dollar. We can still make it in Manila but wouldn't
be able to save anything if we stay here. Our rent is now nearly half my
retirement income.
