[LinP3] Re: Keeping your driver's license

Ahah!!! The truth has been spoken, the rules are: There are NO
RULES!! After inquiring about getting a license, I was told by a
clerk in the city hall,(a friend of my wife) "If you have the Pesos
to pay, you can get a license." So, off I went to the LTO, and
without any other requests, I paid a clerk 7,000 Pesos, and got a
temp license, with the regular one due as quickly as I get a
B'rngy "clearance," drug test, and police report, to the tune of 500
Pesos each.
My primary reason for doing this was mentioned in a couple of
earlier posts here; the safety of NOT having to produce my passport
when asked for ID, and no more worry about having to replace it if
lost or stolen. You know the "LOOK" when you produce it for ID.
But
on another note, it gives them a sense of one desiring to be a part
of the country,(you'd be surprised at the level of acceptance
afterwards, I no longer need my wife to "bargain" for me when making
certain purchases, and all of you know what I mean by that phrase.

The most important FUN REASON of all is; when I feel like a good game
of "Chicken,Dodge-Ball, and Bumper Cars, rolled into a Demolition
Derby atmosphere," I just roll out the "tank," and let it rip!!
For a guy that learned how to drive in the mountains of the
Carolinas, back before the movie "Thunder Road" was made, and ripping
and running from the cops by racing to the state borders, etc, driving
here is like a throwback to my teen-age days, and the locals have
MUCH RESPECT, when they see this "Crazy Kano" roll out on the roads
here. Not that I'm advising this as a means of "Family
Entertainment." tho, just expressing my means of getting along,
especially when the local police keep asking me for tips on driving
and handling my vehicle. Can't tell them everything tho, they just
might try to use them on me, Ha Ha.
In all honesty, it DOES take a LOT of nerve to get out and drive
among the locals, most don't know ANY of the proper rules of the
road, so one must drive with their "head on a swivel" and be alert
for ANYTHING,and I DO MEAN ANYTHING!! I've seen some amazing messes
made with these little motorbikes, cars, trucks, and SUVs!! Thank God
they don't have the big bikes I'm used to seeing in the States, nor
the cars!! Now THAT'S when I'll be sitting on the sidelines
watching!! That's a scary thought to even have, guess I better go and
relax my imagination with a calming libation.

Happy Trails!! Ha Ha
