certainly the u.s.passport is most helpful as an id, but it's also
too valuable to carry on one's person all day. and normally too,
many u.s.passport holders don't want everyone to be passing their
passports around/ogling them (to prevent fraud), as will most
certainly be the case if they carry it on their person all day and
flash it each time their name is called/ they need to leave an id
with the guard, etc.etc.
